Harnessing the Sun to Extract Oxygen on the Moon
Scientists are testing a system that uses sunlight to extract oxygen from simulated lunar soil, with the goal of producing oxygen for use at the Moon's south pole. The system, part of the Carbothermal Reduction Demonstration project, uses a solar concentrator and mirrors to focus light and initiate a chemical reaction. This technology could potentially support future lunar missions by providing a reliable source of oxygen.
