Statement by Prime Minister Carney on Emancipation Day
Prime Minister Carney marked Emancipation Day by acknowledging Canada's history of slavery and the ongoing struggles of Black Canadians. While the Slavery Abolition Act of 1834 was a turning point, freedom and equality were not immediately achieved, and many barriers persisted. Today, Canadians honor those who fought for a fairer and stronger country where everyone can thrive.
